Sally & Ian: Kelmarsh Wedding

Sally & Ian: Kelmarsh Wedding

Sally and Ian were married at the beginning of August on a scorching hot day at St Deny’s Church in Kelmarsh, with their wedding reception at the glorious Kelmarsh Hall. The day began getting ready with Sally and the girls and Sally’s beautiful cat Bee. In fact, it was Sally’s love of bees (the buzzy kind!) and nature in general that was the inspiration for choosing Kelmarsh for their venue. Kelmarsh’s gardens are an absolute delight, and the Walled Garden in particular is breathtaking. Here are Sally and Ian’s highlights.

Sally & Ian

Sally & Ian

It’s been a very busy Winter 2018 and Spring 2019, although it’s been quiet on this blog! The last few months have seen us building the commercial photography side of Mirror Imaging Photography, redesigning the website and working with an ever growing client base of creatives, small businesses and Plc’s. We’ve been spending time with the family’s of past wedding clients, capturing their loved ones, life achievements and growing babies! In January I was able to draw on twelve years industry experience and deliver a lecture to The Nottingham Trent University photography students on what running a business in photography is really like. I’ve also spent some precious time reconnecting with drawing (posting on my art page!), as well as working quietly on an exciting fine art photography project that I will be launching soon.

Accordingly our wedding season is a quiet one this year, and we are photographing weddings by request, rather than from any kind of intensive marketing. The utterly lovely side effect is we get to work with couples who seek us out, who really appreciate the quality and colour in our photographs, love our work ethos and for whom no other photographer will do! How lucky are we.

Sally and Ian’s wedding is getting closer, and it was time to take some pre-wedding images ahead of their Kelmarsh Hall wedding in early August. We planned the engagement shoot date weeks ago and happened to picked THE hottest day this summer. No matter; we had tree shade and backlight galore, and plenty of cold fizzy water afterwards. Sally and Ian are great company to spend time with, very gracious and kind, and clearly so good together.

Francesca & Jonathan: Engagement Photoshoot

Francesca & Jonathan: Engagement Photoshoot

We spent a couple of hours over the weekend with Francesca and Jonathan, who booked us to capture their wedding after seeing their friends Tim & Nicky’s photographs. When you have a home and gardens as beautiful as they do, it’s the obvious location for a pre-wedding photoshoot. And of course their dogs wanted to pose for the camera too, which they did beautifully. After a grey and dark start to the day we ventured outside to admire their favourite Acer tree in all its Autumn glory, then we took in the breathtaking view looking out onto rolling countryside, and then, rather joyfully the sunshine came out. Their wedding day is in Cambridgeshire at the end of the month.

Jemma & Damon: Southwell Minster & Norwood Park Wedding

Jemma & Damon: Southwell Minster & Norwood Park Wedding

Jemma and Damon were married on Thursday 20th September at the impressive Southwell Minster with reception at nearby Norwood Park, which as wedding venues go is a favourite combination of Mirror Imaging’s. I think it is probably the wettest wedding in our 11 years of photographing weddings, but we fully embraced the weather! I have to thank the verger at The Minster for kindly lending me a towel to dry off. I love the rich, warm tones of their images that defy the grey day, enhanced by a regal colour scheme of rich purples and pinks.

Bouquets, buttonholes and reception flowers by Zinc Floral Design. Jemma’s makeup was by the lovely Adele Coxon. Her elegant wedding dress was by Sophia Tolli (with fitting and alterations by Frances Day). The 3-tier buttercream cake was by Southwell Cakery with showstopping floral details by Zinc.

Georgina & Chris: Matlock Wedding

Georgina & Chris: Matlock Wedding

Matlock is a pretty town in the Peak District with stone buildings and winding streets curving up steep hills. Its Town Hall faces onto the road so you’d never guess the scale of the building beyond, and one of its ornate wooden panelled rooms played host to Georgina and Chris’s wedding ceremony. Our day started with a hubbub of animated guests in the micropub Stanley’s, before the vintage bus arrived with the bridal squad. It was raining heavily as they departed from the bus, lifting the grey day dressed in bright colours with even brighter spirits, singing the chorus to Frankie Valli’s ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ at the top of their voices as we took some photographs in the Town Hall doorway!

After Georgina and Chris exchanged vows and said “I do”, we captured a few more photos in the gardens behind the Town Hall then departed on the bus for nearby Tansley Village Hall. Built in 1843 as a school house, it has been sensitively maintained by the villagers, providing a light and lovely blank canvas for Georgina to work her creative magic! They chose a subtly retro ‘Kate Spade’ inspired theme, with black and white polka dots and lots of pink, masses of hanging lanterns across the ceiling and miniature cyclamen on the tables.

We left the party as guests were tucking into their buffet. Here are some highlights from their happy day.

Jemma & Damon: Engagement Shoot Nottinghamshire

Yesterday we met up with Jemma and Damon, who are tying the knot next week at the Southwell Minster with a Norwood Park reception! There was much laughter as we walked and talked, taking photographs along the way. After ten years together, it’s clear how natural and genuine the affection is between them, which was lovely to capture. They’ve made some gorgeous choices for their wedding day too, and we’re looking forward to working with Zinc Floral Design again.

Rohini & Greg: Wedding Finale at The Savoy Cinema Nottingham

Rohini & Greg: Wedding Finale at The Savoy Cinema Nottingham

In a feat of impressive partying stamina, Ro, Greg and 140 of their guests were up and in Nottingham ready to celebrate again the day after their Hindu celebration. Ro and Greg's wedding finale was held at The Savoy Cinema, an art deco style building and still a working cinema (if you click on the link you'll see a great black and white image in their gallery taken in the 1940's!). Their white Audi R8 drew some admiring glances parked outside. Ro and Greg's second day was a relaxed gathering with their wedding vows taking place in Screen 1, popcorn and Prosecco to follow, and of course Boris the dog.

Georgina & Chris: Nottinghamshire Engagement Shoot

Georgina & Chris: Nottinghamshire Engagement Shoot

Last night we met up with Georgina and Chris, ahead of their Matlock wedding in early September. I was keeping my fingers crossed for a golden hour, hazy-sunset kinda evening, but it wasn't to be; with the exception of a little light peaking through the trees we got a dark and overcast evening, darker than it's been in a while. No matter, there was plenty of laughter and some lush, green countryside backdrops, so it all turned out beautifully. And I loved Georgina's one-of-a-kind, vintage engagement ring; so different and striking.

It was lovely to spend a relaxed couple of hours re-connecting with Georgina and Chris before the big day, as they booked a while ago. I'm really looking forward to their creative, colourful, subtly-retro wedding with plenty of personal touches.

Rohini & Greg: Kelham Hall Hindu Wedding

Rohini & Greg: Kelham Hall Hindu Wedding

Wow, what a wedding! From the exquisite bridal details right through to an awesome night's partying. Rohini and Greg chose two professional photographers to cover their day (as is sometimes the custom for larger ethnic and Asian weddings), and as the other photographer was focused on the groom's party and natural guest photography, it was Mirror Imaging's privilege to capture the day as it unfolded, with particular emphasis on the bride Rohini, her family and the bridal preparations. It was a real joy to share this time with the family, even though I caught serious shoe envy over Ro's gold Louboutin heels.

I always knew I wanted to capture Rohini's bridal portrait in the gold drawing room of their venue, Kelham Hall, and I'd envisaged this particular image in my mind's eye before the big day. The richness of the fabric and gold embroidery of her dress together with her ornate Mehendi hand art all looked incredible with the guilded walls as a backdrop. These striking, elegant portraits of Ro are amongst my favourite photographs of the day, if not the whole year.

The Hindu wedding ceremony was full of meaningful symbolism. Each ritual represented the bond and equality between the couple, and I loved the messages woven into this part of the day. After a gorgeous appearance from Boris the dog, the cake cutting, speeches and a huge Indian feast, came the dancing. Although we were nearly twelve hours into photographing the day, I was swept along with the party atmosphere and a brilliant DJ set by Ravi at Krystal Group, dancing away on the stage photographing the crowd with their hands in the air.  What a fantastic, uplifting end to the night.

Thank you to Susan for your assistance, being my second eyes, ears and hands and for your unwavering support.

These are Mirror Imaging Photography's highlights, I honestly struggled to select my favourites, as there were so many I love! I hope you enjoy looking through them.

Kate & David: Hazelgap Barn Wedding

Kate & David: Hazelgap Barn Wedding

Kate and David were married in June two weeks ago, in the midst of this glorious weather, although the sky was changing all day from blue to grey and back again. We started our day with the girls at Ye Olde Bell near Retford, with Adele Coxon doing makeup and Kate's hair, and Kay Rhodes doing the bridesmaid's pretty up-do's. Kate's stunning lace dress was by Blue by Enzoani with shoes by Jenny Packham. The summery pink and blue bouquets, flower girl wreath and buttonholes were created by The Flower Girl. We took some time to take advantage of the gorgeous light in the Victoria Suite and fulfil Kate's request for a photograph on the main staircase.

We met with the groom's party at Hazelgap Barn who were suited and booted in Ted Baker, then Kate arrived in the white Bentley by Fairytale Wedding Cars. After the ceremony, we threw confetti by Shropshire Petals. Guests enjoyed drinks and canapés while we took some photographs with Kate and David. Kate most wanted a backdrop of greenery to her wedding photographs, and the woodlands surrounding Hazelgap fitted her brief perfectly.

We captured the reception details and speeches before we left the wedding party to continue their celebrations. Stunning floral decor by Floralmedia adorned the entrance to the dining area, with mini milk pails on each table filled with country blooms as a nod to David's dairy farm.

We hope you enjoy these highlights.

Tim & Nicky: Hallowing Celebration

Tim & Nicky: Hallowing Celebration

Tim and Nicky hosted a spectacular party on the last day of June, bringing together family and friends, following their official marriage in London earlier in the month. They held a 'hallowing' ceremony and party at their home to bless their nuptials in the company of their loved ones. This isn't the first time we've had the privilege to capture the family's celebrations, having photographed Tim's son's Harry's 21st a few years back. On this occasion, it proved to be one of the hottest days I've ever photographed in; positively Mediterranean. The sunshine didn't stop shining all day and there wasn't a cloud in the blue sky.

The day began with the 'usher's lunch', a perfectly relaxed gathering of Tim's sons and close friends with cold beer, buffet food and the sunlight dancing off the adjacent swimming pool. We then joined the girls getting ready, in time to see Nicky step into her Wedgwood blue embellished Stewart Parvin couture gown. From a photographic perspective, Tim and Nicky wanted me to approach the day almost entirely candidly, with the exception of some cherished family group photographs. I think you can see how much laughter there was, and feel the joy and happiness in the resulting images. My brief not only placed a strong emphasis on photographs of their guests enjoying themselves but also the exquisite decor. Pop Nicholson's team at Vincent & Stubbs decorated the first marquee with a glorious floral arch, leading through to the ceremony area. Hanging circles of foliage and flowers, huge urns packed with oak leaves, roses, peonies, stocks and lilies smelt as amazing as you'd imagine.

After plentiful canapés and champagne to the chilled-out sounds of Intermezzo string quartet, the cake cutting and speeches took place. There was lots of laughter and tears, as words of thanks and gratitude were shared, giving poignancy and meaning to the day. The second marquee then greeted all 250+ guests with an abundance of soft pinks and purple flowers and a backdrop of gold mirrors to bounce light around. Guests tucked into sirloin steak and chips by T R Catering and a rather special red wine Tim had sourced for his guests. The sound of stunning opera vocals took everyone by surprise, as the waiters who'd been serving canapés all afternoon suddenly burst into a majestic rendition of several opera classics. It was the Three Waiters, who left the room with a rousing finale of napkin waving.

Dancing began almost straight after the meal, with the dance floor being flooded very quickly to the band's upbeat covers of rock and pop classics of everyone from Prince to Whitney Houston. After 10 years photographing weddings, I can honestly say Tim & Nicky's friends rock the dance floor better than anyone.

A big thank you to Julian for ably assisting as my 'second shooter' including the gorgeous drone shots that allowed us to get a completely different perspective (and the drone lives to fly another day!), and of course to Susan for unfailingly supporting us both and being my second pair of arms and eyes. And sincere thanks to Tim and Nicky for having me capture their celebration. I have pleasure in presenting my favourite images from the day; it's time to grab a drink, settle in and view on a big screen. As the volume of images is so high, please be patient as it loads! I hope you enjoy them.

Rohini & Greg: Nottingham Engagement Shoot

Rohini & Greg: Nottingham Engagement Shoot

It was all brilliant smiles and sunshine earlier today, as we met up with Rohini and Greg at the gorgeous Nottingham University gardens. The weather was hot hot hot with full sun, which is a challenge in itself to photograph in, but we made the most of it with some beautiful backlight. Ro and Greg are having us photograph their two day celebration - a huge Indian wedding at Kelham Hall for over 250 guests, and then a civil ceremony the next day in the centre of Nottingham. Roll on August!

Last night we met up with Kate and David, who are marrying at local venue Hazelgap Barn in a couple of weeks. We were able to have a relaxing photowalk before the sun went down, with a rather majestic visitor who seated himself in the background of the photographs. We then headed off to a nearby pub to make wedding day plans. Not long to go now till their big day - we just need this glorious weather to hold!

Holly & Emma: Norwood Park Wedding

Holly & Emma: Norwood Park Wedding

Holly and Emma were married a couple of weeks ago in an outdoor ceremony at the resplendent Norwood Park. Highly Strung provided the musical backdrop as guests took their seats under the big tree. The roses were in full bloom, the birds were singing in the background and there was just a slight breeze blowing as they exchanged vows before friends and family. Glasses of cold fizzy were then enjoyed on the lawn in the glorious sunshine. Could there be anything more perfect?! Holly and Emma chose a cheerful colour scheme of blue and yellow, with flowers by Flower Barn. We only stayed for four hours, but it was enough to capture some gorgeous and plentiful photographs of them getting ready, the ceremony, the couple and their loved ones.

Jo & Joe: Southwell Minster Wedding & The Old Vol

Jo & Joe: Southwell Minster Wedding & The Old Vol

There's no two ways about it, the blog for Jo & Joe's wedding is huge. I think I may have got a little carried away! To be fair to me, they did host a massive party, and their groomsmen and bridesmaids alone totalled 20. It was a day with two very different vibes; a traditional ceremony in the grandiose Southwell Minster followed by a 'let your hair down' party, taking over their favourite pub The Old Vol. It rained everywhere else in Nottinghamshire and the clouds were threatening all day, so I have no idea how we managed to avoid the rain, but I was very grateful we did!

This is definitely a time to grab a drink and take in all the details to follow. For me as a photographer, Jo and Joe's wedding was a challenging mix of a fast pace and low light, and a great opportunity to get some wonderful observational shots. There is therefore a generous dose of unscripted, unposed images that I'm proud to say are amongst my favourites. I hope you enjoy them

Boho Glam: Styled shoot at Langar Hall

Boho Glam: Styled shoot at Langar Hall

What a joy it was to bring this styled shoot together!

This project started a few months ago, when Adele at a CW Campervans telephoned and requested some photographs of their newly refurbished convertible ivory VW Beetle (named 'Daisy'), that they would be hiring out for weddings as part of their VW fleet. To bring the car to life, we decided to incorporate a bridal photoshoot.

I gave some thought as to the sort of bride who might want to hire an ivory convertible beetle with ivory leather interior: bohemian, glamorous, independent-minded, feminine. Iconic Bride bridal boutique suggested open guipure lace designs from WToo Watters that embodied this vibe. I made a mood board playing up to the spring season with golden yellows. The vision in my head was of a bride sat in the driving seat, dressed in lace, flower crown, with unapologetically bold boho jewellery.

Jo & Joe: Nottingham Engagement Shoot

Last Friday we met up with Jo and Joe, who are our next couple to marry at the beginning of June. They're holding their ceremony at the magnificent Southwell Minster followed by a chilled out, party reception at The Old Vol gastro pub. What a cool mix of venues. We met in the centre of Nottingham, at one of the city's pretty parklands, and had a relaxed 'photo-walk' and chat. Flowers are starting to bloom at this time of year, and we also caught the last of the pink cherry blossom. A shortage of a baby-sitter meant they brought their adorable 9 month old baby girl, who we've met twice before at a wedding fair and our first meeting. She watched the proceedings quietly and without any fuss, before agreeing to take part... and then stole the show ;) We can't wait to photograph this beautiful family's special day next month.

Holly & Emma: Engagement photoshoot Nottinghamshire

Holly & Emma: Engagement photoshoot Nottinghamshire

Over the weekend we met up with Holly and Emma, who are marrying next month at one of Mirror Imaging's favourite wedding venues: Norwood Park in Southwell. Not only is it close by, but the team at Norwood are so can-do and accommodating; weddings really are a passion to them, and they'll do everything they can to make it right. Holly and Emma got in touch via a recommendation by the venue, and we met again in a secluded green space to capture their pre-wedding shoot. These engagement sessions can happen a long while after an actual proposal, but they're so valuable for re-connecting with our couples, and to shake out any apprehension about being photographed. We also go through and plan the big day afterwards, something all my couples love as it starts to make it all seem so real, and gives some very solid reassurance of how the wedding day will flow. Here's my picks from Holly and Emma's pre-wedding photoshoot...

Natalie & Luke: Kelham House Wedding

Natalie & Luke: Kelham House Wedding

Natalie and Luke were married on 17th March, having travelled all the way over from Australia to spend their day with family, friends and loved ones at Kelham House. I think this particular day will go down in history, not only amongst their family as a day of celebration, but also for having the most varied weather conditions, as The Beast From The East struck the UK for the second time! We had bright sun, then snow, sun again, high winds (forecast up to 70mph that day), glacial temperatures, some more sun, twice a snow blizzard, before the evening arrived and everywhere froze. It was truly bizarre and a challenge as the light was changing constantly and it was too cold for outdoor photography. Natalie and Luke braved it for a couple of minutes though resulting in my favourite photograph of the day! We left everyone in the evening, partying the night away in the warm.

Sarah & Dave: Lace Market Hotel, Nottingham Wedding

Sarah & Dave: Lace Market Hotel, Nottingham Wedding

Sarah and Dave first got engaged several years ago, while living in Australia, and they always planned on holding their wedding day in Nottingham. We took their engagement photographs near Nottingham castle and at World Service Restaurant, which was originally to be their wedding reception venue. Unfortunately, life sometimes throws us some curveballs and they unexpectedly had to delay their wedding plans and return to the UK. Then over Christmas, two and a half years after their engagement shoot, Sarah messaged me with a wedding date in the new year. They'd decided on The Lace Market Hotel, which could accommodate the ceremony, reception and allow for all their guests to stay over in one stylish city centre location.

Amongst the first week of dull, rainy days in January, Sunday 7th came around as a bright, light day. In a certain direction, the sky was even a brilliant blue. We couldn't have been more blessed. We started the day in the studio suite with the girls, who ate sushi and drank fizzy to toast the day ahead. There was such a happy atmosphere and I absolutely love the series of images we did with the girls, you can clearly see the bond of years of friendship that's closer to sisterhood. Sarah posed in her garter by Extra Special Touch, and with her classical rose and ranunculus Floraldeco bouquet.

Next we met the boys in the Cock & Hoop, the hotel's pub located right next door. I've known Dave and best man Ross for 18 years, and we had a laugh and captured some great camaraderie between them. Sarah's dad had flown from America to give his daughter away, and there were some happy tears as Dave caught sight of his bride walking toward him (sorry, Dave!).

For the reception, Floraldeco provided a display of different white blooms, including lilac and scented english roses, mixed with plenty of candlelight, which looked magical and very elegant. Here are their highlights:
